Ariel Dorfman is a Chilean writer who became extremely popular in academia in the late 60's by a little book called "How to read Duck Donald "in 1971, in conjunction with which both describe the ideological components of the Walt Disney cartoon, drawing of Marxism and psychoanalysis. The work marked the beginning of a series of investigations of the ideological impact of children's magazines, including the elephant Babar and The Lone Ranger and other manifestations of mass culture. This book then would happen to English Mattelart collaboration: How to Read Donald Duck: Imperialist Ideology in the Disney comic.
However, in its period of being out of Chile, Dorfman started to become a recurring name in intellectual circles as an essayist on everything. But one day he wrote a play: Death and the Maiden. The title is a piece of Franz Schubert who listens to the protagonist, Paulina Salas, when tortured. Because Paul is a victim of a dictatorship, which survived. But it was saved. And that is the core of the work. At the beginning of history, Paulina has rebuilt his life with her boyfriend Gerardo Escobar, who actively participates as insurgent regime, being editor an underground newspaper. Later get married and settle on the coast. One day Gary has problems with one of the tires of his car and is taken home by an unknown man. Once home, Paulina recognizes the voice of the stranger as her tormentor. And all I thought he had forgotten on your brain, causing a click that transforms from victim to victimizer.
The work began to gain reputation, being one of the most represented Latin America in world history. Then take Roman Polanski film and made a film atypical, because it focuses on two people, Sigourney Weaver and the wonderful, great and ultrafabuloso Ben Kingsley.
